Gender Warriors...and those who love them
Gender
ambiguity is becoming a topic of note in legal, medical, psychological
and social circles. It is unusual for someone to not know anyone with gender
issues, and if you do know or are such a someone, there are several places
you may go to inform yourself. You may want to go to The
Frequently Asked Questions page to find out more about transgendered
people and their concerns. And the Harry
Benjamin International Dysphoria Association (HBIGDA) is the recognized
authority for accurate medical and legal information orelevant to all kinds
of gender issues.

"The
Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network" (
GLSEN ) is a new and exciting development for Utah. This group will
be connected to Gay, Lesbian and Straight support groups nationwide. The
idea is for non-homophobic teachers and administrators in Utah to network
and figure out LEGAL ways to support our gay and lesbian student population.
GLSTEN has a local chapter in Salt Lake City with a website for local news
and events. Or attend the monthly meeting, at the Gay
and Lesbian Community Center , newly opened at 366 North 300 West in
Salt Lake. You do not need to be gay, lesbian, or an educator to be involved
in GLSTN, simply interested in educating young people against the kind
of bigotry and homophobia many learn at home and take for granted. The
mission statement of GLSTN is to "Wipe out homophobia in this generation".
If you are heterosexual, but are related to or know someone who is gay
or transgendered, and you have questions...(I'd be surprised if you didn't!)...do
you know about PFLAG ..Parents and Friends
of Lesbians and Gays? A wonderful organization which has done a great deal
to dispel misinformation of all kinds. And there's the WesternTranssexual
Support Network, (WSTN) which is an immense collection of information and
resources.
And
what of issues of spirituality inherent in being gay, or differently
gendered? How do religious bodies currently in existence serve those who
are outside the norm? A new endeavor, Oh My Godness, is in place at the
Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Utah to discuss and address this and
other questions of spirit. Click here for information.
I
recommend a book on Gender Issues...several books, in fact. These are written
for the totally uninformed, which makes them extremely vauable as most
people fit in that category. The book Second
Serve , by former tennis star Renee Richards,
is a no-holds-barred look at the inner feelings of someone with Gender
dysphoria . Slightly more contemporary is a book entitled Mirrors,by
Geri Nettick, and there is much other literature available. For those
of you who think this is a recent phenomenon, I recommend Leslie Feinberg's
Transgender
Warriors , winner of the 1997 Firecracker Book Award for Nonfiction.
I
hope you have enjoyed the places you have found on this page. There will
